The Washington Media Scholars Foundationhas named Greenlee School students Emily Belloma (marketing and advertising, ’18) and Sojung (Leslie) Lee (advertising, ’18) as 2016 Media Fellows. This is the first time two Greenlee students have been selected in the same year. The organization’s Media Fellows program awards scholarships to qualified undergraduate students who are interested in pursuing careers in strategic public policy advertising research, management planning and buying.

Jay Newell, associate professor in advertising, encourages Greenlee advertising students to apply to the program every year.

“The Media Fellows program is really talent scouting for students who are engaged in this field and have potential as future professionals in this business. It supports those students with financial aid and its very large network of contacts between advertising agencies, political consulting firms and media companies,” said Newell.

Both Belloma and Lee have taken Newell’s media planning class (ADVRT 335), which teaches advanced advertising and public relations students how to connect audiences with the marketing needs of advertisers. In the last three semesters, students in the course focused on the advertising strategy behind the 2016 presidential election cycle, as well as learning how media consumers can be more informed about the advertising they are viewing. Students in the Fall 2016 class studied the amount of presidential campaign advertising on television in Iowa and their findings and conclusions were published in The (Cedar Rapids) Gazette, eastern Iowa’s leading daily newspaper.

Belloma hails from Columbia, Iowa, and hopes to pursue a career in media planning after her graduation in May. Lee is an international student from South Korea who would like to work in advertising as a copywriter.

“We’re delighted that two of our Greenlee student will be Washington Media Fellows. This is a testament to their skill set and the advertising faculty’s commitment to creativity, advising and public service. Scholarships not only help defray student debt; they facilitate timely graduation because students do not have to take as many part-time jobs to make ends meet. And high-profile support such as this helps build confidence and talent for the workforce,” said Michael Bugeja, Greenlee School director.

The Washington Media Scholar Foundation is an organization that provides opportunities for advertising undergraduates to work on public policy issues, as well as meet professional leaders in the field. Applicants to the Media Fellows program must be juniors or seniors in good academic standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0 in their major concentration.

Previous Greenlee students who have been named Media Fellows include Katlego Mogongwa (advertising, ’15), a summer 2013 recipient, and Alexis Nicholson (advertising, ’15), a summer 2015 recipient.
